How To Keep Your Dog Collar Clean
A Guide to Pristine Pet Accessories
Welcome to Bonnie Woof, where my passion for dogs and quality come together! Offering you and your furry friend/s exceptional dog collars.
Ensuring your dog's collar stays pristine is important for both hygiene and longevity. So here’s how to keep your dog collar clean, ready for every adventure!
Materials Needed:
- Mild dish soap or pet-safe shampoo
- Warm water
- A small brush (such as an old toothbrush)
- A clean towel
- White vinegar (optional)
- Baking soda (optional)
Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide:
- Remove the Collar: Start by taking the collar off your dog. Funnily enough, this makes the cleaning process easier… for you and your dog!
- Inspect the Collar: Check for any wear and tear. If your dog’s been up to mischief and the collar is starting to fray or the buckle’s damaged, it might be time for a new Bonnie Woof collar.
- Pre-soak the Collar: Fill a bowl with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish soap or pet-safe shampoo. For extra deodorising, add a tablespoon of white vinegar. Let the collar soak for 15-20 minutes to loosen any dirt and grime.
- Scrub the Collar: Scrub the collar with a small brush, focusing on areas with embedded dirt or stains. Although our collars are durable, don’t go hammer and tongs in case you damage the material!
- Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the collar under warm running water to remove all soap residue. Soap left on the collar may irritate your dog’s skin and attract more dirt.
- Optional Deodorising: If the collar has an odour, make a paste with baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the collar, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Baking soda helps neutralise odours.
- Dry the Collar: Pat the collar with a clean towel to remove excess water. Lay it flat or hang it up to air dry completely. Avoid using a dryer or placing the collar in direct sunlight. (In the UK, direct sunlight shouldn’t be too much of a problem…!)
- Condition Leather Collars: If your dog wears one of our real leather collars, apply a leather conditioner once it’s dry to keep it supple and prevent cracking.
- Reattach the Collar: Once the collar is completely dry and conditioned, you can put it back on your dog, ready for their next adventure.
Maintenance Tips:
- Regular Cleaning: Clean your dog’s collar every few weeks or as needed to prevent the buildup of dirt and bacteria.
- Check Fit and Condition: Regularly check that the collar still fits properly and is in good condition. An ill-fitting collar can cause discomfort.
- Rotate Collars: If possible, have a spare Bonnie Woof collar. Rotating collars will extend their lifespan and ensure your dog always has a clean collar to wear.
I believe in providing only the best for your dogs! My collars are tried-and-tested with love and designed to stand the test of time, just like the bond you share with your furry companion/s.
By following these steps, you can keep your dog collar clean and fresh for a loooooong time.
Thank you for being a part of the Bonnie Woof family, where every collar tells a story of love, loyalty and endless tail wags!
